The Board of Education wants to hear from you as we work on the redistricting process! To ensure that every Tulsan is appropriately represented by the Tulsa Board of Education, state law requires that school districts complete a redistricting process every decade after the completion of the United States Census.
The Board is currently considering two potential maps that were developed based on community feedback. On Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5:30pm the Board of Education will hold a meeting for the public to give feedback on these map options and will include a possible vote regarding redistricting. The meeting will be held in the Cheryl Selman Room of the Education Service Center. Those wanting to speak during public comment can sign up until Wednesday at 4pm online or in person until 5:25pm. If you are not able to attend this meeting, you can also share your feedback by emailing your board member. November is Native American Heritage Month: We are celebrating Native American Heritage Month with cultural activities and events, including Turquoise Day and Rock Your Mocks. Check out the Native American Heritage Month schedule below and join us in participating! .
- Orange Shirt Day Nov. 15: The slogan for Orange Shirt Day is Every Child Matters, and this day recognizes the children left behind and adult survivors of Indian Residential Schools in the United States.
- Wear red on Nov. 16: We will wear red to honor the generations of American Indians and Alaska Natives who have mourned missing and murdered loved ones. Click here to learn more about the Missing or Murdered Indigenous People Crisis.
- Wear green on Nov. 17: We will wear green to recognize tribal land and nation acknowledgements. Land acknowledgements raise awareness about the Indigenous histories, perspectives, and experiences that are often suppressed or forgotten.
- Turquoise Day on Nov. 18: We will wear turquoise to celebrate Native American Heritage Month and honor Native Americans. Turquoise is the primary stone of the Navajo people and stands for purity.
Coats for Kids (and adults too)! Trav’s Coats for Kids is once again helping provide free winter coats to local children and families. If you need a coat – for a child or for yourself – you can visit the following locations to pick one up free of charge between Nov. 14 and Jan. 14:
- First Baptist Church Downtown at 420 S. Detroit Ave on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10am-2pm
- First Baptist Church Caring Center South at 6110 S. 99th E. Ave. every Monday from 4-7pm
Please note: Both locations will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Dec. 19 through Jan. 2.
Free tutoring available to all students in grades 3-12! All students in grades 3 – 12 can access free online tutoring on weekdays from 7am – 10pm and on weekends from 7am - 8pm. The Parent Resource Center (located at 525 E. 46th St. N. in the Alcott building next to North Star Academy) is offering new services to families this year. Supports available include formula, diapers, and food for infants; clothing; on-site mental health and addiction treatment services (by appointment only); one-on-one financial counseling; and services for children with special needs.
